Press Release: GSR features on CBS 60 Minutes
GSR was pleased to be able to contribute to this item on seabed minerals on CBS’s flagship current affairs show 60 Minutes, broadcast on 17 November.

Metals like cobalt, manganese and nickel are crucial for wind turbines, solar panels and electric vehicle batteries. The demand for these metals is on the increase as a result – research by the World Bank projects that in a scenario where we limit global temperature increases to under 2 degrees, demand will grow by more than 1000 per cent. On top of that the global population is growing rapidly, and more and more people are living in cities which require huge quantities of metal.
At the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, 4.5km down, there is more mineral wealth than on land.
Given the urgent need to establish new sources of metal, CBS asks why the US is sitting on the side-lines while other nations explore the oceans for a sustainable future.
